BRITCAR 3 Hours - Silverstone 10 October 2004

No luck for Sean and Michael McInerney at Silverstone, but a lot of hard work for the team. A persistent gearbox problem returned during qualifying before a quick time could be set. Undaunted the team changed the gearbox and managed to get the car out in the race soon after it started. The effort was unrewarded as the problem returned in the first hour, leaving retirement as the only option.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Donnington 25-26 September 2004

Trev and Paul recieve a thank you from John (Donnington 26/09/04)In the last meeting of the season John George ran out of engines for the Peugeot 406. After an encouraging first practice session on a greasy track, the head gasket "gave up" as the car was being warmed up for the second session. This prevented John taking part in the qualifying session. Although a another engine was fitted overnight it was known that it was not in the best of health. Sadly it did not last the first race leaving John as a spectator for the second and third races.

With two steady drives to third, Ed Pead secured second place in the Clio Championship. Each drive needed skill and persistence to come from a lower grid position but in each race Ed was not able to challenge new Champion Paul Rivett who was the class of the field. Heavy rain during qualifying made it difficult to achieve good grid positions.

Fulvio Mussi continued to improve on his grid positions finishing 9th and 12th and staying out of the midfield madness.

The car set competitive lap times for the class but pitted several times trying to cure a rubbing problem at the rear of the car.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Snetterton 4-5 September 2004

A disappointing weekend for Mardi Gras which was typified by a the niggles that prevented better results.

Although John George finished all three races the car was off the pace as a succession of small problems had to be rectified with the car.

Ed Pead was disappointed with the set up on his car in the first race which prevented him staying with the leaders a situation that continued in the second race.

Fulvio Mussi's antics at Russell during the second race raised cheers from the spectators after he straight lined the chicane, across the grass, on several occasions.

BRITCAR - Dunlop ARRIVA Willhire 300 - Snetterton 28 August 2004

Mardi Gras ran two cars in the Dunlop ARRIVA Willhire 5 hour race at Snetterton.

Sean and Michael McInerney finished 7th overall and 1st in class in their Honda Integra after a race long dice with the Lemmer/Blencowe/Bridgeman Honda Civic.

With an hour to go they made their final stop and were fuelled to the end of the race. They were over a lap behind the leading Civic, which was marginal on fuel to finish the race. With 15 minutes to go the Lemmer Civic had to stop and managed to return to the circuit in front of the McInerney's Integra. However it had not stopped for the mandatory one minute during the refuelling. The race was red flagged with ten minutes to run and the Lemmer car was given a time penalty for the infringement, placing them 8th and 2nd in class. Although a close race, the McInerney's were lucky to inherit the class win from a car that was faster on the day.

The second car was driven by John George and Phil Bennett but expired after the first hour when it collided with a BMW, damaging the radiators. John however set the fastest lap in the class before going out.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Brands Hatch 21-22 August 2004

It was a hard working weekend for the Mardi Gras team at Brands Hatch with little reward from the results.

After breaking the gearbox in qualifying, John George suffered persistent alternator problems that eliminated him from two of the three races.

It was disappointing for Ed Pead on Sunday when a broken drive shaft on the warm up lap eliminated him from round 16. A steady race on Saturday left him 2nd behind Jonathan Adam. With dropped scores, this leaves Adam leading Ed by 20 points in the Championship.

After rolling the car in the Friday practice the team did well to get Flavio Mussi's car out for Saturdays race. The unlucky Flavio Mussi was end the first race in the Paddock Hill gravel trap on the first lap. Sundays efforts were more rewarding with a steady 13th.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Knockhill 7-8 August 2004

The results at Knockhill were encouraging for the team.

John George had three consistent finishes challenging for lower order places while getting to know the car.

Ed Pead was unlucky to only finish 3rd in the second Clio race after leading into the last corner. He finished down the field in the first race after getting involved in an earlier incident.

Fulvio Mussi made steady progress with two good finishes.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Croft 24-25 July 2004

Mardi Gras successfully cured a persistent misfire on John George's Gas powered Peugeot 406 to qualify 20th for race one. Progress was steady but a gas injection problem in the second race meant that the car had to run on petrol for the third race.

Ed Pead left Croft still leading the Clio Championship after two incident packed races. He lost out for 3rd to Nick Adcock on the last lap of Race 1 but gained from Adam and Rivett coming together in race two.

After a good result in race one Fulvio Mussi incurred a 10 second penalty for a jump start in race two to lower him to 13th.

This was to be a disappointing meeting for Sean and Michael Mc Inerney. A gearbox problem in qualifying left them unable to race.

Clio Cup - Thruxton 29-30 May 2004

In what was to turn out to be a sad Clio meeting, the Mardi Gras drivers met with mixed results at Thruxton. Ed Pead was to spin on Saturday and have to pit on Sunday, to rectify a wheel arch which was rubbing on the tyre, following contact. A disappointing result after a solid qualifying performance.

Fulvio Mussi had his best result of the year with two solid performances despite some bumping and boring.

Mardi Gras wish to send their condolences to the friends and family of Kevin Lloyd who so tragically died during Saturdays race.

Clio Cup - Oulton Park 22-23 May 2004

Ed Pead's progress at Oulton Park was solid rather than spectacular having to recover from a poor qualifying session. After a lack lustre race on Saturday, Ed managed to return to the podium on Sunday.

With Adam and Rivett pulling clear at the front in Round 8, all eyes were on the battles further down the order with Hunter and Pead engaged in a hard-fought scrap for third place. On lap seven Pead took third from Hunter with a good move at Old Hall Corner, but he ran wide on the exit costing him two places. It took a further three laps for Ed to get back to 3rd when the race was red flagged.

Ed Pead, who now leads the championship by 37 points from main rival Rivett, said: “It took me a while to get past Steven Hunter and unfortunately it’s been one of those weekends where things didn’t go according to plan. We didn’t have a very good qualifying so I started further back than I wanted to but I’m happy to get a podium for the team.”

Fulvio Mussi progressed steadily throughout the meeting with only a spin at Old Hall spoiling his finishing position in Round 7.

Mardi Gras switches to BTCC-spec Peugeot 406

Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship team Mardi Gras Motorsport has said it will plough ahead with gas-powered technology after deciding to replace its Honda Civic Type R with a Peugeot 406.

The Silverstone-based squad made national headlines by becoming the BTCC’s first team to use LPG technology. However, it admits that its Civic, which runs to European Touring Car regulations, remains overweight. The team believes it stands a much better chance of moving up the grid with the BTCC-spec Peugeot that won the championship’s Independents Trophy in 2002.

It will miss the next two race meetings at Oulton Park, 22/23 May and Mondello Park before returning for the second half of the 2004 season.

George and Mardi Gras will return with the ex-Vic Lee-run Team Halfords Peugeot 406 “The BTCC organisers have been very generous with reducing the weight allowance for ETCC-spec cars to help balance out performance, but this particular Civic is always going to be close to 100kgs overweight,” said Mardi Gras team manager Paul Hetherington.

“We have acquired the Peugeot 406 from Vic Lee, whose team ran it to the Independents title in 2002 and who has been extremely generous and helpful in putting together a deal for us.

“We will need to crack on with converting the 406 to LPG technology as time will undoubtedly pass quickly and our driver John George will need to test the car. We are confident that when we return we will be able to quickly challenge the mid-field runners and score points.”

EERC - Donnington 15 May 2004

The Mardi Gras Honda Integra, driven by Sean and Michael McInerney finished 9th overall and 2nd in class in the 100 minute Britcar race at Donnington.

It was to be a very close race for the cars in Class 3. The Leggate / Reid MG out paced Sean for the first part of the race with Anthony Reid at the wheel of the MG. The McInerney's attempt to get back on terms with a slick pit stop was thwarted when the safety car was despatched during their pit stop. Michael had to sit at the end of the pit lane as the field passed by behind the safety car, putting the Integra a lap down on the MG. Michael had a good race however with the Griffin / Waterworth Clio, just beating it to the flag.

This weekend was without doubt the busiest in Mardi Gras's history. 2 different venues, 4 cars, 5 drivers and 7 races. It was all made rewarding by double race victories at both Pembrey and Silverstone.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Silverstone 9-10 May 2004

Ed Pead stamped his authority on the Clio Cup with a double race victory and increased his lead in the Championship. Fulvio Mussi ended his string of bad luck and got beyond the first corner in Race 2 for a fine 9th place.

EERC - Pembrey 9-10 May 2004

After DNFs in the first two rounds of the Britcar Series, Sean and Michael McInerney scored two fine class victories in the two, 2 hour, races held at Pembrey.

Reliability and slick pit stops were necessary to take class wins over the Leggate/Jardine MG and the Frick/Flatt VW Beetle. On both days the leading class contenders, could only be separated by a couple of seconds until the pit stops. The Integra was able to run further and at one point was in the top three on overall classification.

It finished 5th and 4th overall in the two races, a creditable performance running against 3.5 litre cars.

BTCC and Clio Cup - Brands Hatch 24-25 April 2004

After the carnage (photo by TOCA)After showing promising improvements in free practice, gearbox problems befell John George before qualifying. The team had to return to the road gearbox, thus setting an unrepresentative qualifying time. Disaster struck early in the first race when John was speared into the wall less than 100 yds from the start. The accident was caused by Keen coming together with Plato but it was Bentwood who ended Mardi Gras's racing for the day.

In the first Clio race on Saturday Ed Pead did well to hold off Paul Rivett until the last lap with a car suffering from under-steer. By this time Jonathan Adam was well ahead for the win. Fulvoi Mussi moved up from his grid position only to be spun by Tom Onslow-Cole. He restarted to finish 12th.

The Sunday race was red flagged early to clear the assorted Clio's deposited around Brands Hatch. It was unfortunate for Ed who was right behind Paul Rivett in 2nd and was well placed to pass for a win. Fulvio's bad luck continued when the car was damaged at the start, only allowing him to limp to Paddock Hill bend to retire.

Ed Pead retained the championship lead after the second round.

It's a busy weekend now for Mardi Gras at BTCC meetings with five races on a Sunday. Ed Pead shone amongst the drivers after leaving Thruton leading the Clio Championship, as he had done after the first meeting of 2003.

Ed was 1st in the first race after working his way through to pass pole sitter Paul Rivett . In the second race Ed yo yo'ed up and down the field before nearly taking the lead at the end of the race. If it had not been for a moment at the chicane on one of the late laps he might well have made it two out of two.

Fulvio Mussi showed promise working his way up the order before being sidelined before the end of both races. In the second race it was a heavy hit against the tyre wall at the chicane.

The secret is out, the next development for the Mardi Gras Civic! (photo by Paul Cherry)

John George progressed slowly in the gas powered Civic. Improving results are expected as the car is developed with improved engine, weight reduction and a racing gearbox in the pipeline.

Michael Macenerny in the pack at Brands (photo by Paul Cherry)Sean and Michael McInerney were very disapointed not to finish for a second time in the 160 minute Britcar Race at Brands Hatch.

After qualifying 3rd in class 3, in blustery wet conditions, they were leading their class and 5th overall when Michael pitted after an hour and a quarter.

Unfortunatly a stud snapped during the wheel change. Despite efforts to change it Sean was not able to continue.

Unfortunately the car was sidelined, with 30 minutes of the two hour race to go, with an engine problem.

After qualifying 2nd in class, 11th overall, Sean started the race in wet and very windy conditions. Following a slick pit stop, to change drivers and put on slicks, the car was in 5th and 1st in class when the engine expired.

Gas Powered Car For Green Flag BTCC
First picture of John George at Donnington Media Launch (courtesy of BTCC Pages)Mardi Gras Motorsport will this year become the first team to race a gas-powered car in the Green Flag MSA British Touring Car Championship when it enters an ETCC-spec Honda Civic Type-R for driver John George.
The LPG-powered car has undergone an engine conversion at specialist company Prins Autogassystemen BV’s factory in Holland and will make its race debut in the BTCC’s opening three rounds at Thruxton on 11th April. Uniquely, each time the car runs low on fuel the Mardi Gras mechanics will install a new gas tank.

BTCC Series Director Alan Gow said: “The BTCC is well aware of the need to embrace alternative energy sources for the future and we are now probably the only touring car championship in the world that is open to petrol, diesel and gas-powered cars.

“Mardi Gras’ entry is certainly going to capture the imagination and is extremely welcome on our grid. Going by the team’s excellent run of success in various saloon car racing categories, I’m sure it will do an extremely professional job with this new technology.”

Mardi Gras team chief Paul Hetherington explained the need for replacement fuel cells. He said: “This will avoid the hazard of parking a refill tank in the paddock. We will transport half a dozen fresh tanks to each race and simply fit a new one whenever we need more fuel.

“The car’s performance is a complete unkown, but I think that makes us underdogs and will help to generate a lot of interest among the fans and the media.”

Mardi Gras is no stranger to the BTCC – it ran as a privateer team in the mid-Nineties with a Honda Accord for Roger Moen and Vauxhall Vectra for Mark Lemmer.

Driver George, however, is a BTCC rookie having previously contested three seasons of Renault UK’s Clio Cup – one of the BTCC’s five supporting championships. George will rack up an extraordinary amount of miles travelling to each BTCC race: he lives in Cornwall and his ‘home’ circuit is Thruxton, Hampshire, three hours’ drive from his home in Par. The Knockhill circuit in Scotland will be his furthest journey – a round trip of over 1,000 miles.

“I’ll probably fly for that one,” said George, whose season will be sponsored by his own hugely successful mobile communications company JAG.

He added: “After surviving three years of the Clio Cup, which at times can become extremely hectic, I’m confident of being able to handle myself in the cut and thrust of the BTCC.”

Ed Pead Returns for 2004 Campaign
Front-running ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup team Mardi Gras Motorsport has confirmed its entry in the 2004 championship with a two-car attack led by last season's Vice-Champion Ed Pead (Beckenham, Kent).

Pead, who returns for his third season of Clio Cup action and his second with Silverstone-based Mardi Gras, will be joined at the crack team by 17-year old category newcomer Fulvio Mussi (Colchester, Essex) who makes the switch to saloons from single-seaters having contested last year's Formula Renault UK Championship.

Paul Hetherington, team boss of Mardi Gras Motorsport, commented: "We're delighted to announce Ed's return to the championship and we're confident we'll be able to take the fight to Paul Rivett who will unquestionably be the man to beat this season.

"Fulvio contested the Formula Renault UK Championship last season and so the switch to Clio this year will be very much a learning curve for him. He's shown good speed in testing and we're certain he'll prove to be a very capable addition to the Clio Cup. We are looking at the possibility of running a third car although this is yet to be determined."

After a short but successful career in karting, Pead competed in Formula Ford before making his Clio Cup debut with Bintcliffe Sport Racing in 2002 where he ended the season sixth overall. A switch to Mardi Gras last season saw him take three wins en route to second in the standings. Mussi meanwhile, a former karter himself, made his car racing debut in 2002 as part of the Formula Honda Championship before graduating to Formula Renault UK last season with Jensen Motorsport.
